Microsoft to Launch Disc-Less Xbox Series X and New Gyro Controller in 2024, According to Leaked Documents

Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch a new disc-less Xbox Series X and a new controller with a gyro in 2024, according to documents accidentally leaked from the FTC v. Microsoft court battle.

The new Xbox Series X console, codenamed “Brooklin,” is said to have a cylindrical design and will come with 2GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, a USB-C front port, and a 6-nanometer die shrink. It will also be more energy-efficient and sustainable than the current model, using 15% less power and 30% more recycled plastic.

The new controller, codenamed “Sebile,” will have a built-in accelerometer and haptics that “double as speakers,” making it more like Sony’s latest DualSense controller. It will also feature new modular thumbsticks, quieter buttons and thumbsticks, and new app features, along with a swappable battery, recycled materials, and improved reparability.

Microsoft is also working on a refreshed Xbox Series S, codenamed “Ellewood,” which is expected to have similar improvements inside, along with double the storage (1TB rather than 512GB).

The new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles are both tentatively scheduled to launch in November 2024, with the new controller launching slightly earlier in September 2024.

The leak of this information could be damaging for Xbox’s gaming business, as it shows the company’s strategy well over a year in advance. However, it also gives gamers a chance to learn more about what Microsoft is working on and to start planning for their next console purchase.

In addition to the above, here are some other thoughts on the leaked documents:

  • The move to a disc-less Xbox Series X is likely to be controversial, as some gamers prefer to have the option of owning physical copies of their games. However, it is also a sign that Microsoft is committed to digital distribution and is looking to make it easier for gamers to access and play games.
  • The new controller with a gyro is a welcome addition, as it will open up new possibilities for gameplay and allow developers to create more immersive experiences.
  • The refreshed Xbox Series S is a good way for Microsoft to keep the console competitive and to make it more attractive to gamers on a budget.
  • The fact that Microsoft is working on new consoles and a new controller more than two years after the launch of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S suggests that the company is committed to the Xbox platform for the long term.

Overall, the leaked documents provide a glimpse into Microsoft’s plans for the future of Xbox. The new consoles and controller represent a significant investment from Microsoft, and they are sure to be of interest to gamers of all kinds.
