The LG DukeBox: A Hybrid Home Speaker That’s as Much Art as Tech

LG

As CES 2024 approaches, tech enthusiasts are getting glimpses of innovative offerings, and LG is set to showcase an array of captivating gadgets in Las Vegas. Among these, LG Labs introduces the DukeBox, a unique audio device that seamlessly blends vintage and contemporary elements. This device integrates vacuum tube audio, a technology with a century-long legacy known for its ability to produce a warm and distinct sound quality, emphasizing each instrument and creating an almost live music experience.

The DukeBox features front-facing bottom speakers and 360-degree speakers on top, enhancing the auditory experience. What sets it apart is the incorporation of visible vacuum pipes, adding a retro touch, while the transparency of the OLED display is adjustable, allowing users to customize the visual aesthetics.

Positioned as a smart speaker with a sleek and retro design, the DukeBox draws inspiration from classic jukeboxes but goes beyond mere music playback. It offers versatility by providing options to play various content, including movies, and even creates ambiance, such as a simulated “fireplace” with the vacuum tubes visible amidst the flames. This innovative device caters to those who appreciate a nostalgic design while embracing modern functionality.

In addition to the DukeBox, LG is set to unveil a myriad of innovations at CES 2024, with the company boasting that its Labs zone will be twice the size of the previous year’s space. Among the anticipated announcements are a two-legged AI-powered robot, laptops featuring AI capabilities, and the CineBeam Qube—a 4K projector delivering stunning 3,840 x 2,160 resolution images, spanning up to 120 inches. Weighing a mere three pounds, the device includes image-mapping technology and a handle that resembles a crank.

Despite LG’s scheduled CES 2024 press conference, the company has a history of pre-announcing several products in the days and weeks leading up to the event. While specific details such as release dates and prices for the DukeBox and the CineBeam Qube are currently unavailable, it is expected that LG will unveil more information during CES. The showcase will also offer attendees an opportunity to personally assess the quality of these products, providing early hands-on impressions. Stay tuned for further updates as LG continues to reveal its cutting-edge offerings.
